It took this to show me that I am not really as apathetic as I thought to the country in which I was born and bred. Yes, I have good memories of Toronto, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Thunder Bay, Vancouver….
But it was in Ottawa that I first was confronted with antisemitism in a way I could not ignore. It was directed at me, personally . . . . in the 1970s, when I left Toronto to study at Carleton University.
That brought me to learn more about being a Jew. And it brought me to make my life in Israel. I have been here since 1976.
Still, I could never have imagined what is happening in Canada now. And then, this man I do not know, Michael Rappaport, comes along and puts together a short videoclip and I break out in loud sobs. The juxtaposition of the national anthem, which we sang in school every morning at the start of the day in elementary school, was just too much to bear against the images.
You can follow Rappaport on “X.” I just did.
Israel is not supported on the Substack payment platform; therefore, I set up a way to make one-time or repeated donations in your own currency using Paypal (Buy me a Coffee, below) or the Ko-fi payment platform here. Isbraelis can send me a private message for another option.
Articles will always be free for all subscribers but a paid subscription or donation is a way to help me sustain myself while doing all the work involved in putting these articles together and would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you to all those who have supported my work by subscribing and/or by donating coffees.
❤️My heart is breaking for you. At least my homies elected Trump.
Sheri, I too hail from there ( idyllic 60's childhood in Halifax and The Maritimes, later a Montreal suburb, currently elderly parents and relatives residing in Toronto, some relatives in Winnipeg, Victoria. We must sadly say 'kaddish' for this once decent country. It exists no more.
