Thank you for publishing this insight from one Alawite family in Syria.

Something is very odd in his explanation of their dire situation. How was Hafez al-Assad able to take control of Syria without the help of the Alawite minorities? What about the massacres in Homs/Hama by the Assad regime?

The Hama massacre had nothing to do with the Alawites so I don't understand why you bring that here. The population of Hama is mostly Sunnis with a section of Ismaili Shia. Homs is Sunni.

For a more in-depth explanation of the rise of the Alawite Assad family to the presidency, you can read my earlier article. I will add that link to this article, so thank you for raising the fact that more should be said about that.

I read your link. It explains everything. The majority of Hafez al-Assad's military were Alawites from the 3 tribes that followed him. Yes, Hama were Islamists and Hafez used his military (mostly Alawites) to quell the uprising there.

He and his son, the Butcher Bashar, have the blood of thousands of Syrians, Lenanese on their hands and endless wars against the State of Israel.

OK. You have kept me digging. Now I find an analyst who says, in contrast with the ethnicity map I found earlier, that half of Homs is Alawite. There are analysts who have been writing that the Alawites were both the backbone of Assad's militia but also its main victims, that they were sacrificed to keep the Assad family in power. I think this deserves a Part 1a to Part 1 so I am now putting it together.
